The patent was issued by the United States Patent Office on August 8, 1939. Clarence Leonard "Kelly" Johnson was an American systems and aeronautical engineer. He founded Skunk Works which is an official alias for Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs where a lot of secret planes were developed. He is recognized for his contributions to a series of important aircraft designs, most notably the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.
